First, unless you are this couple you have no idea who they are. I know, being broke and living without a plan will sound like someone you know or, worse, you! Regardless of the similarities, it is not who you think it is. However, if you have been in my office in the last 24 months, you will recognize the gift they left me on the last day of working the program. This jar sits on my desk and holds fifteen shredded credit cards! Many think that the jar is full of cards from many people – they are from one couple.
When they first came to me they were, like many I meet, BROKE! Owing several tens of thousands in unsecured debts, they were skeptical if there was any way out for them. However, they made the decision to move forward. Like all of us, once that decision was made, life began to happen. As Dave Ramsey puts it, “Murphy decided to move in.”
Halfway through the program, they lost focus. Really, they never had focus in those first three months. One Saturday morning in early April of 2010, they were done. I told them they were wasting their time, my time, and their money they paid may. Why? Simply, they were not committed. That challenge, coupled with the decision timeline I gave them, pushed them to commitment.
Since that April day in 2010, they have been committed and “bustin” it. They decided to make it work, take responsibility for their past financial indiscretions, and work a plan to recover. It has been working for them (and others too).
I would be less than honest if I painted a rosy picture. Things have been tough. Things have happened in their family that have hit them financially. Those “things” did not stop and neither have they. They are “bustin” it.
They stopped by a few weeks ago and the balance now on that original “several tens of thousands in unsecured debts” is now down to under $7,500. WOW!! The end is in site for them. The end of a debt balance, the end of debt shackles, the end of anxiety on how to pay. When they pay it all off, they will begin to build wealth and they will do it aggressivley!
Where are you? Are you “bustin” it?
